The Red Tree - Summer 2005

The Red Tree tells the story of Otem; a girl who has had to leave her home and come to a new place where everything is unfamiliar. Set in a fictitious world, the children discover, throughout the promenade performance and by the sensory exploration of the girl’s world, who she is and where she has come from.

We ran workshops with young refugees and asylum seekers, and writer, Peter Rumney, to inspire Otem’s story. We also worked with a group of international students from Manning School in Nottingham and musicians from around the world to create the soundtrack to the performance.

Neelan Brugge-mann, a teacher at Manning school, said in an article about the project: ‘Often because of their language difficulties the girls don’t want to show off what they can do and tend to hide away in class. This project has helped them to be more confident in other lessons and added new skills and boosted creativity in other subjects.’ (The Guardian, 13th Sept 2005)
